Toenail fungus has a medical term of “onychomycosis” but the most frequently used term is “fungal toenails”. Onychomycosis expresses together fungus and yeasts illness in the nail. Men get the nail disorder more than women. This is also affects elderly diabetics.

Back in year 1800s, cases of fungal toenails are minimal. The swelling number of infected people is related to high contact to fungus which is usually accumulated though the utilization of public shower rooms in gyms, hot tubs, saunas and public swimming pools. Factors that are main causes of toenail fungus are due to maturing, being a male, nail trauma, perspiring feet, deprived circulation, foot fungus and weak immune system. Athletes are more prone to have fungus infection. Perspiration in the shoe joined with frequent nail trauma adds to the possibility of infection.

Athletes bearing slack fitting shoes which permits congestion of the nails next to the shoe and anyone who is wearing shoes that are too tight are at greater risk of building up toenail fungus. There are many nail fungus removers. One of the treatments for fungus is through oral antifungal treatment. The most popular of these medications are Sporonox and Lamisil. These medications can be costly and is to be in used once a day for three months.

The efficiency of these medications may vary from 60-80% and reappearance time is 15%. Lamisil shows to be much efficient and has lesser side effects compared with Sporonox. Taking these medications has been proven to produce benevolent drug interactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, taste disorders and lightheadedness. Serious unpleasant incidents but very rare to occur which comprises hepatitis and also acute hepatic necrosis. This topical solution can only be purchased with prescription and can also be costly. Other prescriptions that are proven to lessen the thickness of the infected nails are Keralac Nail Gel and Carmol 40. This can definitely lessen the thickness and yellowing of the nail in several incidents.

Diagnosis of toenail fungus is relatively straightforward, based on clinical signs and laboratory tests. While the toenail appearance may indicate a toenail fungus infection, laboratory tests are necessary for confirmation. Symptoms of toenail fungus can appear to be other medical conditions, such nail psoriasis or yellow nail syndrome.

Fungi in the nail can be detected with a microscope; however, this does not identify exactly which type of fungi is causing the infection. Nail samples are either treated in the laboratory with a special solution to identify the fungus or crushed and put in a container to allow the fungi to grow. Both of these procedures will establish the form of fungi.

Toenail fungus treatment is long, up to as much as one year, expensive and some medications may have side effects. As well, there is no guarantee the treatment will be successful. There exists, unfortunately, the possibility of relapse after completion of treatment or a different form of fungi may invade to cause another infections.

Pharmacological medications offer two routes for treatment of toenail fungus: oral and topical.

There are two main oral anti-fungal medications currently available. These are itraconazole (Sporanox) and terbinafine (Lamisil). In studies, terbinafine appears to have a higher success rate and is tolerated easier than itraconazole. Terbinafine has a 60 to 80 percent effectiveness estimate and a 15 percent recurrence rate. The major benefit to oral anti-fungal medications is they are able to penetrate the nail via the body.

Both medications can cause several side effects, including digestive upset, rash, headache and dizziness. Blood tests for liver function are usually given before prescribing either of these medications, as they are not safe for people with liver or heart disease

Fluconazole (Diflucan) is sometimes used as an alternative to itraconazole and terbinafine, but it is not approved by the Federal Drug and Administration for treatment of toenail fungus.

Topical medications are not as effective as oral anti-fungal medications. As a rule, they cannot cure toenail fungus, as they are not able to infiltrate the nail enough to eradicate the fungi. Topical medications available in the United States include Penlac (a nail polish), Nizoral Cream and Lamisil Cream. Side effects are minimal and rare.

Topical treatments are considered beneficial as part of a treatment regime that includes anti-fungal medications.

Natural remedies, which profess to cure toenail fungus, consist of Australian tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, bleach and Vic’s VapoRub. It should be noted there is currently no scientific proof for success of these remedies and the effectiveness rate is probably less than ten percent. You should always consult your doctor before trying home remedies.

It can take up to one year for an infected nail to grow back healthy after successful treatment.

You have become uncomfortable in your own skin. Your shy about putting on your favorite pair of strappy sandals and enjoying a night out on the town. As simple and little as it may seem, toenail fungus can have a drastic affect on your self esteem and your personal life. But don’t worry, before you bury yourself in doctor bills, I know a few home remedies that can help you put this demon behind you.

One of the most popular naturally healing alternative for treating toenail fungus also known as the magic potion is tea tree oil. It’s also known for treating a variety of medical problems. Tea Tree Oil comes from a tree in Australia called “Melaleuca alternafolia”. If you have decided to use the tea tree oil as a treatment alternative you first want to start by filing the infected toenail down. Once this is done you can begin applying the oil to the infected toe, by rubbing the oil on the toe with a cotton ball, or apply it using a toothbrush or you might find it better to just soak your foot in a basin containing the oil. If you feel any kind of pain or irritation in the toe after using the tea tree oil you can dilute it with olive oil. But if discomfort continues, you should immediately stop using it and seek a physician’s help.

Using Listerine mouthwash is also an alternative for treating toenail fungus! Shocking, isn’t it? A lot of people have found this method to be very effective. For some this remedy has cleared their infection in a few days with just a 30 minute use everyday. The antiseptic is so powerful it can leave your toe looking healthy.

You can also use oregano and olive oil together to treat toenail fungus. Oregano oil is very powerful anti fungus remedy. It has been used in several over the counter fungus medications. What makes it so powerful and effective? It has antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, analgesic and anti-parasitical ingredients in it. When combined with olive oil it makes it an even stronger, fungus killer!

I know you may have heard this thousands of times, but your diet can also play a big role in helping cure your toenail fungus. You should eat more foods that contain probiotics or good bacteria such as yogurt, and milk products.

These are just a few home remedies that you can try out yourself at home and avoid the expensive costs of medical bills and prescription medications.

This NY Times article reports on the use of lasers for the treatment of nail fungus. The whole idea is to use a laser beam to irradiate the fungus and kill it without hurting the nail and surrounding tissue. There are already a number of companies who are developing these laser treatments. One of those companies is Nomir Medical Technologies with their Noveon laser. Their laser treatment is still under FDA registration trials.

Another company called PathoLase has a system called PinPointe FootLaser. If these treatments really work, then it would be a valid option for getting treatment for your toenail fungus. In time, the treatments may become as widespread as LASIK is for the eyes. However, these treatments are not cheap and may not be covered by your medical insurance. You’ll want to check with your insurance company before undergoing the treatment.

Has anyone tried these laser treatments for nail fungus? Would you care to share your experience?
